NHac set the challenge actually taking our drunken ramblings and website purchase to a reality with Deep Fried Cucumber.
Stage Two: Deep Fried Marshmallows
So I’m not as great on camera - you will know an NMac post by the ramblings and images.
Recipe:
Chocolate Beer Batter
Cadbury drinking chocolate
Flour
Schloss – Aldi german beer - $30/slab, get on it!
Cinnamon
Sugar
For frying
2 Litres sunflower oil
Marshmallows – we tried mini vanilla and pink flavour.
Introducing my first class taster: Elli – bloody mary connoisseur, Italian parents that know good food, and a sucker for my stupid ideas.
Marshmallow – good
Batter – good
Chocolate – good
Beer – good
To embark on the world of doesitdeepfry.com I went all out and purchased a top of the line commercial grade deep fryer (read: aldi had a sale on a crap deep fryer, and my hangover took over and bought it)
Batter: Mix a cup of flour, a generous shmudge of chocolate, a few shakes of ground cinnamon and a shmudge of sugar. Crack open a beer and take a good glug to reward yourself for starting the process. Consider who will be eating your deep fried goodness, smile to yourself and pour 3-4 glugs of beer into the dry mixture. Mix together roughly, you want air in there.
Do Not Amuse Yourself by Eating All the Marshmallows! (ELLI!)
Take your marshmallows and submerge in chocolate batter, realise the batter just slides off. Continue regardless.
Use a slotted spoon (realise you don’t have one and use a fork) to lower the marshmallows into the batter.
Results: All the batter runs off, the marshmallows expand and explode with the heat. The sugar crystallises and dissolves in the oil. A mushy mess may be salvaged as below.
Look at yourself in disappointment at your apparent failure. Have a glug of beer. Note that the mushy mess is cooling down and hardening. All might not be lost… there is still the taste test.
Now tell me that pic couldn’t sell deep fried marshmallow!
DEEP FRIED MARSHMALLOW..... SUCCESS!!!!
We refined the process:
- Tried adding more flour to thicken the batter
- Changing oil temperature
- Battering and frying each marshmallow separately
- Placing in as a ball of multiple marshmallows
Results:
- Big puffy oil filled balls with a hint of sugariness, but no indication of marshmallow.
- Small bits of batter stained slightly pink with no marshmallow in sight
- A perfect looking ball of chocolate batter concealing spatters of pink and vanilla marshmallows – this looks just like what we wanted. Served on a base of cinnamon sugar with some fresh marshmallows on the side.
o Deep Fried Marshmallow Perfection!
RIGHT????
Ok, so it tasted REVOLTING!!! Hahahaha but it looked great, and we laughed for hours over how bad it was… that’s kinda a success?
I give this 2 hot chips out of a bucket.
Have you deep fried marshmallow?
Will you deep fry marshmallow?
Will NHac challenge NMac and try to perfect the art of deep fried marshmallows, or will he move onto a new food type? I’ve heard whispers of a deep fried Christmas special… rum balls perhaps?
